MAIL TO ORDER BRIDE SCAM

TWO Chinese nationals and a Filipina accomplice were found guilty for human trafficking after swindling an overseas applicant that led to abuse by her employer.

In a 48-page decision by the Regional Trial Court Branch 57 in San Carlos City, the three accused: Li Chin Rong, Violeta Aquino Lee, and Lai Wei Qi, were found guilty and sentenced to 20-years in prison, and were ordered to pay a fine of P1 million each. The court also ordered that they pay the complainant (whose identity is withheld for security reasons) P 400,000 in damages.

Lai Wei Qi remains at large.

The trio were engaged in a “Mail Order Bride” scheme.

The complaint stemmed from a recruitment in 2017 in Urbiztondo town, where Li Chun Rong and Violeta Aquino Lee invited the complainant to work in China, on the condition that she marries to Lai Wei Qi, a Chinese national introduced by the duo.

In dire straits, the victim agreed to the condition, and was transported to China.

She, however, was unable to get the job promised to her, as her passport and visa have been confiscated by Lai Wei Qi, and was abused by him and his brother-in-law.

The victim was able to contact the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), which then sent a message to the National Bureau of Investigation – International Airport Division (NBI-IAID), who went to repatriate the victim.

The NBI-IAID filed charges against the trio at the Office of the City Prosecutor in San Carlos City. (Ahikam Pasion)
