SUSPECTED LEADER OF GUN-FOR-FIRE GROUP

A dismissed police officer was arrested by the PNP-Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) early Saturday morning, August 7.

Authorities arrested former P/Lt. Col. Wilson Magpali in Barangay Legaspi in Tayug town.

An arrest warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 28 of San Fernando City in La Union for the crime of murder, was served to Magpali.

Police recovered a cal. 9mm pistol (with PNP markings) and three magazines with live bullets.

Magpali, according to police investigation, is the alleged leader of a gun-for-hire group operating in Region I, and is responsible for political killings in the region, particularly, in La Union.

His clients, said the police, were mostly high-profile individuals who wanted their enemies eliminated.

It will be recalled that on July 2021, Magpali surrendered to then-PNP Chief Guillermo Eleazar and issued a statement of his willingness to voluntarily surrender to authorities after he sensed he was being tracked by PNP operatives.

Magpali was first tagged in an explosion of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Agoo, La Union, two weeks before the 2016 National and Local Elections. One was killed, while eight others were injured. The target allegedly was former Congressman Eufranio ‘Franny’ Eriguel.

He was also tagged in a murder case in May 2018, when Congressman Franny Eriguel was killed, along with two others.

Two more political killings in the province of La Union happened in 2018, where Magpali and his group were again tagged behind the assassination of Sudipen Mayor Alexander Buquing in October, and Balaoan Vice Mayor Alfred Concepcion.

Meanwhile, the IMEG also reported that on August 2, they arrested dismissed policeman SPO1 Armando Arenas Junio Jr. in Barangay Tambac in Bayambang after a search warrant implementation. (Ahikam Pasion)
