THE Liga ng Barangay provincial federation condemned the brutal slaying of a barangay captain of Laoac town on July 3, and calls on the police to step up its investigation and bring the perpetrators before the bar of justice.

The provincial Liga headed by ex-officio provincial board member Jinky Zaplan condoled with the bereaved family of the victim, Elesio Eslao, 54, barangay captain of Talogtog, Laoac, who was gunned down and killed while on board a motorcycle driven by son, Mark Laurence, 15, at about 4:30 p.m. on July 3.

Mark Laurence was unhurt but he was visibly shocked by the gun attack that killed his father.

Zaplan deplored the impunity with which criminal elements act against barangay officials who are simply doing their job, adding that Eslao was not the only barangay captain who lost his life in a similar violent incident.

Sustaining gunshot wounds in different parts of his body fired by a gunman back riding in another motorcycle, Eslao was rushed to the Sacred Heart Hospital in Urdaneta City where he was declared dead on arrival.

The Eslao father and son were proceeding to the north direction when two unidentified persons on board another motorcycle followed them and shot them at close range.

The suspects fled to an unknown direction afterwards. (Leonardo Micua)
