10 seminarians test COVID-positive
SEMINARY ON LOCKDOWN
THE Mary Help of Christians Theology Seminary in Barangay Palapad, San Fabian was placed under lockdown after 10 seminarians tested positive for COVID-19.
In an executive order issued on Jan. 27 by Mayor Constante Agbayani, he said “considering the number of seminarians who were infected with COVID-19 virus and in order to prevent, contain and mitigate spread of this virus and also to promote the health and safety of the people within the area, a granular lockdown and focused containment is hereby declared at the Mary Help of Christians Theology Seminary”.
The lockdown is effective until Feb. 5, 2021.
The Barangay Council of Palapad and their Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams in coordination with the Municipal Health Office were ordered to implement his order.
Provincial Health Officer Anna de Guzman said in a phone interview that a mother of one of the seminarians from Alaminos City was suspected to be the source of the virus spread.
De Guzman said based on investigation conducted, the mother was not feeling well and was experiencing signs and symptoms of the virus infection when she visited her son in the seminary.
The seminary reportedly holds face-to-face classes since there are very few seminarians studying in the area and are observing social distancing and other minimum health protocols like wearing of face masks and face shields, she added.
De Guzman said the seminarians are in isolation inside the seminary and are regularly checked.
She said the area has been considered a critical zone based on zoning containment when there are clustered cases and the area must be placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine.
A report of the Municipal Health Office in San Fabian showed that the new confirmed COVID cases involving seminarians are from different towns in Pangasinan, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya and Zambales with ages 21-28 years old.
As of Jan. 25, San Fabian. had 28 active cases. (Eva Visperas)
