Report mayors, kapitans not doing enough vs COVID cases

IF communities think the heads of their Local Government Unit (LGU) are not doing enough to contain the spread of COVID-19 cases in their areas, they should be reported to the Regional Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) headed by the Department of the Interior and Local Government  (DILG) and the Department of Health (DOH).

This was reiterated by Dr. Reuel Bobis, infectious disease cluster head of DOH Region 1 during the virtual forum of KBP-Pangasinan, when asked what people should do if their LGU is not doing enough to address the COVID-19 contagion.

Bobis said the regional body is meeting regularly to promulgate policies applicable down to the local level.

Bobis, who is the designated spokesperson of the IATF, said the regional body will not hesitate to crack the whip on erring LGUs if they fail to act on active cases of COVID-19 in their areas.

He said the DILG is co-heading the regional inter-agency task force along with the DOH, so has overall supervision of the LGUs and it can be expected to act on complaints vs. LGU officials.

There have been reports in media that some LGUs are still reluctant to order granular lockdown or make way for zonal containment strategy even if active COVID-19 cases are increasing in their areas.

At the same time, Bobis said that in the meantime that no COVID-19 vaccine is yet available in the country, the only way to fight the disease is to follow all infection control and prevention procedures.

Meanwhile, Bobis clarified that DOH is not recommending any brand of vaccine for the people, and all the vaccines to be used by the people are approved by the Food and Drugs Administration. (Leonardo Micua)
