THE Police Provincial Office turned over 107 Galil Ace 21 rifles to eight police stations in a bid to boost their firepower in protecting their areas of responsibility from communist terrorists and criminal groups.

The rifles were turned over by P/Colonel Ronald Gayo, police provincial director, last December 28 to the chiefs of police of Dasol, Infanta, Mabini, Mangatarem, Natividad, San Nicolas, San Quintin and Umingan, in the presence of their respective local chief executives.

Except for Dasol, all the towns are located in the border areas with Zambales, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Nueva Vizcaya where possible attacks can be launched by bands of New People’s Army terrorists.

It was in Mangatarem where over 40 members of the NPA staged a recent attack which was nipped in the bud by elements of the 702nd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army and the police.

Gayo earlier placed all police stations in the border areas on red alert and ordered the Provincial Police Mobile in Western and Eastern Pangasinan to beef up the manpower of the police stations in anticipation of possible attacks by NPA on the occasion of the CPP-NPA anniversary last December 26.

Gayo said no untoward incident happened in Pangasinan during the Christmas holidays except for some isolated shooting and stabbing incidents in a few towns. (Leonardo Micua)
