DEPARTMENT of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar led the formal opening and inauguration of P1.88-billion-funded Urdaneta By-pass Road for a smooth and fast travel inside Pangasinan and to Ilocos Region.

Villar said the 7.17-kilometer-long road, with six lanes and four small bridges, built under President Duterte’s Build, Build, Build Project, starts at the junction of the Manila North Road in Brgy. Nancayasan and traverses westward terminating at Brgy. Anonas.

He added that the DPWH will extend the by-pass road to the towns of Binalonan and Villasis and will construct more diversion roads in all towns in the province.

He said the plan is in support of the vision of President Duterte to connect Luzon via one expressway network and ease travel from the Ilocos to Bicol Regions by nine hours only.

He however, clarified that more bypass roads will be constructed along the Daang Maharlika so travelers will have a choice whether to pass through expressways or main highways.

“This is for our economy because many are lost because of traffic congestion,” the DPWH secretary said, adding that bike lanes and solar lighting will be installed soon as funds are made available.

DPWH Regional Director Ronnel Tan said the project started in 2014 with the acquisition of road right of way and the construction went full blast in 2016 and was finished in 2020.

Fifth District Rep. Ramon Guico III said the new by-pass road will help decongest traffic volume in the commercial district. (Eva Visperas)
