THE city of Dagupan remains the epicenter of the pandemic in Pangasinan as its active COVID-19 cases soared to 184 on January 7, representing a little less than one third of the 438 active COVID-19 registered that day in the province.

On January 4, Mayor Brian Lim issued an executive order reimposing the liquor ban and restoring the 10 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. curfew in a bid to stop the sharp increase of cases in the city.

However, the mayor, according to the city’s Public Information Office, refused to admit that the renewed spike in the number of COVID-19 cases could be attributed to the just concluded Christmas holidays.

The monitoring of the Provincial Health Office for seven days from January 1 showed that Dagupan City registered 90 new confirmed cases, the biggest of which was 36 last January 4, 25 on January 2 and 19 on January 6.

There were three COVID-19 cases from Dagupan who died over the same period: a 70-year-old man who died in an isolation facility on January 5, a 77-year-old woman who died in the hospital on January 3, and a 77-year-old man who died on January 4.

A report of the Dagupan PIO also quoted Dr. Ophelia Rivera, COVID-19 focal person in Dagupan, saying that most of the recorded new confirmed COVID-19 cases were close contacts of those who were earlier declared positive of the virus.

Based on the January 6 tally of the City Health Office, Pantal leads in the number of active COVID-19 cases with 23 active cases, followed by Bonuan Gueset with 16 and Bolosan 11.

There was no indication that the city government will consider placing barangays on lockdown down where some communities and households report positive cases. (Leonardo Micua)
