Pangasinan remains polio free

THE Province of Pangasinan continues to remain polio free as indicated in the recent province-wide Measles-rubella and oral polio vaccine supplemental immunization activity (MR-OPV SIA) jointly conducted by the Department of Health (DOH) and the Provincial Government of Pangasinan.
The activity started on October 23 to December 3 which targeted infants ages from 9-59 months for measles-rubella vaccine, and 0-59 months for oral polio vaccine.
The DOH sets a target of 95 percent for MR-OPV SIA in which the province of Pangasinan achieved a total of 98.99 percent for MR vaccine and a total of 96.74 for polio vaccine.
Provincial Health Officer Anna De Guzman stressed that the accomplishment rate for the said activity is a great indication that the parents are supporting the vaccine again after the Dengvaxia controversy towards the end of 2017 which severely affected the acceptance of the Immunization program in the country.
“Sa taas po ng accomplishment natin napatunayan natin na iyong mga kababayan natin ay muling nagtitiwala sa kakayanan ng pagbibigay proteksyon ng bakuna sa mga anak nila,” said Provincial Health Officer Anna De Guzman.
Dra. De Guzman also hoped that with the recent activity, the cases of measles-rubella and oral polio in the province will drop.
“Umaasa po tayo na iyon, sa dami po ng nabakunahan natin para sa pagbabakuna ng measles-rubella, hindi po tayo magtatala ng kaso laban sa tigdas at tigdas hangin. Ganon din sa polio ay mananatili na ang probinsya ng Pangasinan na polio free,” added Dra. De Guzman.
The World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), local government units, and non-government units such as Rotary Club were also part of the said activity. /Diane A. Tinambacan
