The red flag is up

LET us not kid ourselves believing that Pangasinan is already up and over the hump. Far from it.  The COVID-19 pandemic is still staring at us, straight into our eyes.

The province is actually facing an even bigger challenge during the holidays.  The expected onset of the second wave of viral infection, which medical experts believe, can be far more vicious and deadlier because the transmission will be from asymptomatic persons known to us.

The Christmas spirit may only be the remaining consolation our people can hope to cherish for a week or so but it could also be the most treacherous time of the year. How can we suspect that our family members, relatives and friends would be carriers of the virus?

As we’ve done in the past, and will continue to do so in weeks ahead, we will be embracing our loved-ones, to console each other, that everything will be all right. But the fact is, it will not be, not for a long shot even if our people are already given the green-and-go for the approved vaccine.

Let us not forget the trauma of some parents who blamed the Dengvaxia for the deaths of their children. It is likely that more will continue to resist the vaccine, so, the threat will be ever present among us.

Let us remind ourselves that all will not be well this Christmas, that we should be more aware that infection is still all too real. Let’s keep looking at the red flag waving up there as we shop and greet everyone for the holidays.

Stubborn Trump

HE concedes and then he does not.  That’s been Donald Trump since he lost to Joe Biden in the Nov. 3 U.S. presidential polls.  Biden beat Trump by more than seven million people’s votes.   On December 14, the electoral college, the final judge in selecting America’s president since 1860, is expected to certify Biden as the 46th White House occupant beginning January 20.  But despite overwhelming proof of his defeat, Trump continues to insist the election was “stolen” without presenting evidence.  This week alone, attorney general William P. Barr, America’s top law enforcement official, broke with Trump by saying, “I have not seen fraud on a scale that could have affected a different outcome in the election.”  Barr also received a letter from 16 assistant U.S. attorneys general saying, “We have not seen evidence of any substantial anomalies.”

When will Trump stand down, only God knows.
