INDEX crimes in Region 1 during this time of pandemic since March decreased by 48.9 percent compared to last year over the same period.

P/Brig. Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr, regional police director, said it showed that from March 17 to Oct. 22, there were 729 index crimes recorded compared to 1,428 last year of the same period or, marked decrease of 697 incidents.

Azurin said in an interview Thursday that the intensified campaign on anti-criminality such as checkpoints, patrols, implementation of search warrants and arrests of wanted persons in his area, coupled with the restricted movement of the people during the enhanced/modified general community quarantine contributed greatly to the reduction of commission of murder, homicide, physical injuries, rape, robbery, theft, among others.

Meanwhile, murder incidents in Pangasinan during the said period were 47 compared to 67 last year of the same period; homicide 15 versus 24; physical injuries 105 versus 213; rape 171 versus 218; robbery 27 versus 93; theft 73 versus 258.

Total index crime in Pangasinan this year was 448 compared to last year’s 921.

Total non-index crime in Pangasinan this year was 4,208 compared to last year’s 5,096.

Meanwhile, the non-index crimes or violation of special laws recorded in the region were at 5,723 compared to 6,411 incidents over the same period last year, a decrease of 688 incidents or 10.7 percent.

Azurin said the high number on non-index crimes is due to the intensified enforcement of special laws that includes the provisions of Articles 151 or the resistance and disobedience to a person in authority or the agents of such person, 148 or direct assault under the Revised Penal Code and the Law on Bayanihan to Heal as One Act under Republic Act 11439 while the enhanced community quarantine/ general community quarantine is being implemented in the region.

Overall, the police regional office recorded 18 in its average monthly crime rate (AMCR) compared to 22 AMCR before the pandemic (March 17-Oct. 22, 2019).

On vehicular traffic accidents, only 1,344 were recorded compared to 4,079 incidents last year representing 75.2 percent decline.

For total crime incidents, PRO1 had 7,796 incidents or compared to last year’s 13,260, or 41.2 percent decrease. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
