Group offers reward P200k for info on Maganes killers
A GROUP of businessmen belonging to the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Eastern Pangasinan has put up an initial reward money of P200,000 to anyone who can provide vital information that will lead to the arrest of the suspects behind the gun slay on Tuesday of Virgilio Maganes.
Rosendo So said the reward money was pooled together by the businessmen in their desire to help solve the murder of Maganes, 62, of Northern Watch, who was shot dead while walking to his residence in Sitio Licsab, Barangay San Blas this town.
The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) Pangasinan Chapter also strongly condemned the killing of Maganes in a statement and urged the authorities “to exert all efforts to conduct thorough investigation and apprehend the perpetrators,” it said in a statement.
Fifth District Rep. Ramon Guico III whose jurisdiction includes Villasis town, said in a statement that, “Vir Maganes’ constant battle for the truth had always put him at odds with those, who in their evil ways, had always tried to suppress it.”
He added, “Yet despite the dangers, he never ran away in fear and not once did he compromise his values and ideals. Throughout his life, he had remained faithful in his service to the people of Pangasinan.”
Guico also said, “This killing is a stark reminder of the risks that our journalists face every day. It is rather unfortunate that in a country that prides itself as a cradle of democracy, voices that speak the truth are silenced by fear of death.”
Villasis Mayor Nonato Abrenica said Maganes visited him in his office two weeks ago, just to exchange pleasantries.
He is hoping that the case will be solved soonest, adding that the town has been very peaceful ever since.
“This is an isolated case but we want justice for Vir,” Abrenica added. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
