FAMILIES BY THE COASTLINE

SOME 300 persons in different towns and cities and 200 in Dagupan were evacuated by their respective local governments when Typhoon Ulysses lashed out Pangasinan on November 12.

All those evacuated were mostly from the coastal areas and flood-prone areas near rivers affected by high tide which rose to 0.6 meter by 12:33 a.m. On November 11, the tide level was down to 0.1 by 3:09 p.m..

Weathermen said only moderate wind and sporadic rains battered the province but high waves of the Lingayen Gulf prompted families to evacuate to adjacent public elementary schools.

Traditional low-lying areas in Dagupan and Lingayen again went underwater due to combined rains and high tide.

The public information office of Dagupan reported that 224 individuals sought temporary shelter at the Federico Ceralde Integrated School in Bonuan Binloc, Malued Day Care Center, North Central Elementary School in Bonuan Gueset, Lasip Chico Barangay Hall and T. Ayson Elementary School.

Meanwhile, the PDRRMO through Shallom Balolong, reported some 200 persons were evacuated in Sual, 30 in San Fabian, 64 in Bolinao and a few others in Bani and Lingayen.

Eight families were also evacuated in Calasiao when water of the Marusay River rose above normal level.

All major rivers, including the Agno river, were placed under close watch but none of these overflowed their banks.

Although Ambuklao dam in Upper Benguet opened its four gates and the Binga Dam, two gates, the San Roque dam was only at 258 meters on November 12 from 257 the day before, too far away from the dam’s critical level of 280 meters.

Damages suffered by rice farmers, particularly in areas where they were about to harvest palay, are still being estimated by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist and on the road infrastructures by the Provincial Engineering Officer and district offices of the Department of Public Works and Highways.
