THE Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Barangay Balaya in San Carlos City will install five prepaid wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) modems in strategic areas to assist pupils and students in their community in their distance learning.

SK chairperson Alexander Doria said the project will help learners in their village in coping with online classes when the schools open in October, particularly those with limited budget for internet access.

Doria said the modems will be installed in the Barangay Hall and in other strategic locations in the village, including waiting sheds.

He said their village is in a far-flung area where internet connectivity is poor.

The SK chapter decided on the prepaid Wi-Fi-modems when its request to internet providers for assistance were unanswered.

Aside from the modems, the chapter initially bought 75 load call cards to ensure that the modems have sufficient load for the learners’ access.

“The activities of the students will be strictly monitored to ensure that they don’t use the free access to browsing other websites. A time limit will also be imposed depending on the timeframe per class,” he said, adding at least eight to 10 students will be accommodated per modem.

Doria said the Wi-Fi modems are powered with an average speed of 5 megabits per second (mbps).

The project is made possible by the P15,000 budget under the Annual Barangay Youth Investment Program (ABYIP). (Jerick Pasiliao)
