Make mayor, kapitan accountable

OUR citizenry need not look further for an effective measure to protect their families from the COVDI-19 infection that could lead to their fatal deaths needlessly.

The answer no longer lies with the national government. It has already prescribed the basic protocol to ward off infection, imposed lockdown where it could and subsidized provision for basic needs, realigned budgets to meet contingencies to help contain the contagion, ramped up on equipping more local laboratories to support mass testing, etc. The national government has done its part.

But to contain the upsurge in COVID cases, the answer now lies with our local government units and their constituencies – us. Specifically, the leadership of the local government units must already be made to account for their failure and success in the campaign to flatten the curve.

Our mayors need to be more proactive in overseeing both the enforcement and implementation of the health protocols down to the sitio level.  And the sitios are under the direct control and supervision of our barangay kapitan.

With local transmission already confirmed, our barangay kapitan must work in tandem with our mayors, if we are to expect to stop COVID-19 contagion. The blame for continued surge should now fall squarely on our mayors and kapitan.

In this regard, we call on Gov. Amado Espino III to finally make mayors and kapitan directly accountable for confirmed cases in their communities. Their weak leadership must be exposed. The province’s medical units and staff can only do so much.

Likable Leni

BY making public her suggestions on how to address the COVID-19 scourge, Leni Robredo has shown her genuine concern anew for our people.  She may not have presented concrete steps on how to lick the vicious virus but still, her 23-minute taped speech aired on ABS-CBN on July 29 must be a welcome respite from all the miseries brought on by this pandemic that has infected 85,000-plus and killed nearly 2,000 Filipinos already as of last counting.  No, the likable vice president did not criticize the way the government has been handling the situation.  Far from that.  In fairness, Robredo was decent, even overly diplomatic, in her appraisal of the situation, citing the need for “more efficient data gathering as the foundation for better decisions, policies and programs.” She even batted for Congress to immediately pass the P1.3-trillon stimulus package to revive the economy.  Isn’t that awe-inspiring?  And, yes, at least she is working.
