BFAR seeks bigger aquaculture production in two years
BUREAU of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is targeting to increase fish production from aquaculture by 60% to meet higher domestic and provide a 10% surplus by 2023.
Agriculture Undersecretary Eduardo Gongona said BFAR’s direction is guided by objectives set by the Department of Agriculture for the remaining term of the Duterte administration.
“If we can develop the 40 percent to grow into 60 percent, we can be on surplus by 10 percent by 2023,”, Gongona said during his visit to Dagupan City, Thursday.
Gongona said the direction now for the last two years of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term is to target at least two percent growth in aquaculture and maintain captured fisheries.
He said BFAR priority fish products are milkfish, tilapia, shellfish and seaweeds while the private can focus on high value fishes like pampano and crabs.
Gongona added the corporate post-harvest marketing ancillary will be boosted as value-added for the targeted increase in production that can increase the value of a P35 billion investment to P78 billion in five years.
The BFAR executive visited the National Integrated Fisheries and Technology Development Centre (NIFTDC) in Dagupan City to look into the oyster and siganid production and to join the forum on” Food Security and Philippine Resiliency side by side with Prosperous Farmers and Fishermen.” (PIA-Pangasinan/ VHS)
