CONSTRUCTION of projects along the Agno River Irrigation System Extension Project (ARISEP) in Eastern Pangasinan by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) have resumed.

According to NIA Regional Manager Engineer Angelito Miguel, the focus of construction is on the expansion of the San Roque re-regulating pond in Sanon, its first phase covering 85 hectares and expected to hold five million cubic meters of water coming from the dam.

“Once the pond expansion has been completed, we will no longer have to worry about the spillover when the pond goes full”, said Miguel. It is currently on 75% complete and expected to finish by September or October this year.

The first phase, costing PHP 285 million, was started in September 2019, and was set to be completed this July, however, the project was temporarily halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bidding for the phase 2 of the PHP 300 million pond expansion is set next month.

Meanwhile, NIA’s other irrigation projects in Eastern Pangasinan: canals along towns of San Quintin, Natividad, and Umingan are also nearing completion.

The check gate in Barangay Bakit-bakit in Rosales town once completed, will connect to the Lower Agno River Irrigation System Improvement Project or LARISIP, and enable flow of water to Alcala town, even extending to Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija.

The ARISEP currently provides service to 10,557 farmers, covering 12,894 hectares of farmland in Eastern Pangasinan.

Meanwhile, Miguel reminded that NIA provides free irrigation service to farmlands with an area of eight hectares below. (Ahikam Pasion)
