THE Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) was happy to announce the recovery of George Chua Cham, a Dagupan-based businessman from COVID-19.

In a Facebook post of FFCCCII on April 20, it said that George Chua Cham, a long-serving board member and chairman of the Belt and Road Committee, was admitted to the Chinese General Hospital on March 24 and was released on April 18.

Meanwhile in a video message, Cham said his nurses told him he was in semi-coma for about 10 days and in very critical condition. He was given only 30% chances of surviving.

During his battle with COVID-19, Cham‘s condition went through complications that he and the medical staff believed it was a miracle that he survived.

Cham spent almost a month at the Chinese General Hospital fighting COVID-19. He was brought there on March 24 and was discharged on April 18. He had fever a week before the 24th.

He said all the hospitals they initially went to had no available room for him and fortunately his daughter-in-law remembered that he and Dr. James Dy are friends. Dy immediately looked for a room for him after he was informed of the family’s dilemma.

At the Chinese General Hospital, his deteriorating condition necessitated intubation and treatment using both Western and Chinese medications.

Cham was one of the first intubated patients who recovered from COVID-19 although he initially couldn’t stand the intubation and had it pulled out.

He said he was about to give up when he cried to Jesus: “It’s your will not mine. If you want me to live, let me live.” He felt utterly powerless in that situation.

He attributes his recovery both to Western and traditional Chinese medicine.

“Be careful, don’t be overconfident that you can overcome this disease because all the while, everybody thought I was so healthy so be careful, stay strong and probably we can go through this experience,” Cham said.

FFCCCII added that as COVID-19 mortality rates drastically increase with age, it said “69-year-old Mr. Chua Cham is considered very fortunate to have survived”.

He thanked Dr. James Dy, his team of doctors at the Chinese General Hospital medical experts from China and his FFCCCII family. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
