Good samaritans spread love and help amid COVID scare

WHILE the world continues to seek ways to combat the dreaded corona virus disease that has claimed hundreds of lives and made hundreds of thousands ill and afraid, non-government organizations and individuals breathe assurance that hope is readily at hand.

Commercial establishments have closed but the Guanzon Group of Companies, a Dagupan-based business which has retail shops in Luzon and Metro Manila has earmarked a P16-million emergency fund: P5-million financial help to employees of the Guanzon group and P1-million relief assistance package from Guanzon and Home Ideas Superstore for Dagupan City and another P1 million for its employees’ families in Calasiao town.

It also earmarked P8 million Kabuhayan Fund interest-free loans for its employees and set aside a food support budget of P1 million for the police, military and civilian traffic personnel manning the checkpoints of Dagupan City and nearby towns.

Net@las Dagupan owners donated 200 bottles of isopropyl alcohol and bibles to the city government.

Kristine Santiago, corporate public relations officer for SM-Pangasinan malls, told the Philippine Information Agency that SM not only paid out monetary compensation for its security and janitorial workers as well as its promodizers but provided water and food to front liners at checkpoint areas in Pangasinan.

Tea shop Macao Imperial Tea, which opened its first branch in Dagupan City last November, donated assorted cakes like cheese cakes, red velvet and blueberry to the Dagupan City Police Station, Region I Medical Centre and checkpoints in Lucao and Bolosan area.

On Friday, personnel of the Panda Fire Brigade, a volunteer fire brigade, went around the city to spray disinfectants in the streets to combat the spread of the corona virus.

Indeed, while government is working 24/7 to contain the spread of COVID-19, it is heartwarming to note that many groups and individuals are willing to extend their helping hands at a time when Pangasinenses need them most. (PIA/VHS)
