Alaminos buys farmers’ veggies, fruits as relief goods
RESIDENTS of Alaminos City received various vegetables and fruits bought by the city government from farmers who could not transport their produce to other markets owing to the declared extreme enhanced community quarantine that restricts movements of residents and bans operations of public transportation in Pangasinan.
City Agriculturist Arceli Talania said City Mayor Arth Bryan Celeste adopted the scheme to help farmers who are unable to sell their produce.
She said some farmers are still able to sell their produce in the market, but there are farmers in far-flung barangays that need help produce tomatoes and other items that rot quickly and whose selling are affected by transport and limited selling schedule.
“Our city government go to their farms to buy them at farmgate prices and pick up their goods and distribute these for our relief operations”.
“We help the farmers and at the same time, we help the community,” she said.
As of March 25, Talania said the city government already bought 530 kilograms (kgs) of tomatoes, 483 kgs squash, 41.5 kgs okra or lady’s fingers, 20kgs sitaw or string beans.
These are packed with a combination of vegetables that can make great viands with rice, sardines, sugar, coffee and others.
She added they also bought 13,280 kgs of watermelons to be distributed.
The tomatoes bought and distributed are of first-class quality because these were meant for delivery to a popular food chain and ordered quantities were greatly reduced.
Others who have available vegetables in their barangays received watermelons plus the other relief goods assistance.
Celeste personally assists city government employees in distributing the items in the barangays, Talania said.
She said buying farmers’ goods will continue as long as relief goods distribution continues. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
