THE staging of the Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) meet set to be held on from February 19-26 in Lingayen has been cancelled and postponed to March 31- April 7.

This was announced by the Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Office 1 Director Tolentino G. Aquino last February 5 after he met with Gov. Amado Espino III to relay the decision of DepEd in response to the latter’s recommendation.

On February 4, Gov. Espino sent a letter to the DepEd regional director recommending the postponement of the regional meet citing health hazards posed by the threat of the nCov in the country.

Through Provincial Resolution No. 139-2020, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of the province has also expressed its sentiments, suggesting the possible postponement of the regional meet.

He said the postponement had to be made as a precautionary measure to prevent the risk of transmission of the highly contagious novel CoronaVirus (nCov).

The DOH approved the recommendation with the directive to all the schools to take precautionary measures to include the adoption of more hygienic practices, avoiding crowded places, and even self-quarantine.

“We reiterate the suspension of the staging of national and regional activities (this February) that involve inter-division and inter-region that involves a big number of student and teacher participants,” said Aquino, in an interview, held shortly after Aquino’s meeting with Gov. Espino.

Still, Aquino pointed out, however, that the new date can still be postponed if the nCoV crisis situation will continue and pose serious health security concerns among the participants.

Earlier, DepEd thru its Management Committee (ManComm) already issued DepEd Memo No. 15, s. 2020 that directed (1.) All national activities that involve learners and teachers in February are suspended, and (2.) All regional, division and district level activities that involve learners and teachers need clearance from the local DOH.  (Leonardo Micua/PIO-MGNO)
