No pork scare despite new ASF cases
WHILE new cases of African swine fever (ASF) have affected two towns in Pangasinan, it has not resulted in pork scare among the consumers.
This was the observation Rosendo So, chairman of Samahan ng Industriyang Agrikultura (SINAG), an indication that people have learned that ASF is not transmitted from hogs to humans.
He said the news of new ASF cases have not shown any effect on market sales of hogs or pork products not only in Pangasinan but in the region.
So said the information drive on ASF succeeded in allaying households’ fears of infection from ASF.
“Finally people are confident that there is no harm to their health if they eat pork,” the SINAG chair said.
Meanwhile, So urged hog raisers and barangay residents to report deaths of hogs in their areas to prevent the spread of ASF virus and prevent losses to the industry.
He said national and local governments’ financial assistance help in the form of indemnification fund for every head of pig culled is also a big help to hog raisers.
The culling of ASF-affected hogs has been done in Binmaley’s five barangays, namely Linoc, Poblacion, Canaoalan, Caloocan Sur and San Isidro Sur and two barangays in Malasiqui ‘s Barangays Apaya and Polong Sur .
Hogs in Barangay Carael, Dagupan City are under quarantine.
Blood samples taken from hogs in Barangay Gayaman in Binmaley were also submitted to the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Center in Sta. Barbara for tests.
Binmaley and Malasiqui have been declared under a state of calamity due to ASF based on separate resolutions passed by their municipal councils last Thursday. (PhilStar Wire Service/ECV)
