VETERAN rider Ysmael Gendrano demonstrated his vast experience in road racing by outsprinting and outsmarting the best of the 10-man lead pack in the last 300 meters to conquer the master division of the 2020 Binmaley Cycling Challenge, his first win in Pangasinan races after four years of victory drought.

The Valenzuela City-born Gendrano clocked the 78-kilometer short but hilly event in 2 hours/4 minutes/24 seconds identically timed with nine others that included Binalonan ace Benjie Nituan and Pangasinan perennial cycling conquistador Alex Billan of Paranaque City who finished second and third, respectively.

Rounding up the top ten were: E.J. Soto of San Fernando City (Pampanga), Arnulfo Albalos of Bugallon, Hector Padilla of Urdaneta City, Ricky Garay of Bugallon, Kiko Valenzuela City (Metro Manila), Joe Maramba of Dagupan City and Toti Carpizo of San Fabian.

In the grandmaster category, perennial winner of Pangasinan races David Jugo of San Fabian proved once more that he’s the “boss” in his division despite stiff competition from 1982 Marlboro Tour 2nd runner-up Elpidio Untalan of Batangas in a mad-dash finish in the last 400 meters, to win by a half-bike length at the Baywalk Area finish line in barangay Baybay Lopez of the host town.

Unheralded Dagupeño rider Archie Nanquil landed third while Alejandro Daoatin of Urbiztondo and Raul de Luna of Malasiqui finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Prizes, trophies and medals were presented by Binmaley municipal administrator Diomedes Bonalos together with 2019 Miss Binmaley Patricia Anne Bangug and sponsor Excellent Noodles’ proprietor, Alex Billan.

The bikefest is another sport project of Binmaley Mayor Simplicio “Sammy” Rosario in connection with the celebration of this year’s town fiesta. (Jesus Garcia, Jr.)
