Five barangays being monitored

CULLING CONTINUES IN MANGALDAN

EIGHTY hogs were already culled in Barangay Bateng, Mangaldan, after they tested positive for African Swine Fever.

Barangay Bateng became the ‘ground zero’ for ASF in the town, and the epicenter of the 1-7-10 protocol of the Department of Agriculture, along with Barangays Talogtog and Bantayan.

Councilor Aldrin Soriano, in an interview Wednesday, said blood sampling of all hogs in the municipality is continuing, after Mayor Marlyn Lambino issued an executive order mandating all hog owners to submit their hogs for testing.

“The blood sampling for all hogs is going smoothly. All barangay chiefs are being mandated to make an inventory on the number of pigs in their respective barangays,” said Soriano.

Meanwhile, three more barangays (Alitaya, Gueguesangen, and Amansabina) are being closely monitored by authorities after receiving reports of pigs dying in the three communities, all located outside of the 1-7-10 protocol.

Initial investigation showed the virus reportedly reached Barangay Bateng, when a policeman assigned in Binmaley Police Station came home.

“He was involved in the culling operations in Binmaley. He became a carrier and unwittingly spread the virus”, said Soriano.

To prevent it from happening again, vaccines and disinfectants were distributed to barangay officials and persons manning the quarantine checkpoints.

Meanwhile, the Sangguniang Bayan is waiting for a recommendation from the Municipal Agriculture Office whether to declare a state of calamity.

“As of now, the situation is under control,” said Soriano. (Ahikam Pasion)
