QUALIFIED persons with disabilities (PWDs) and elderly persons in 4 towns and 1 city were provided assistive devices from the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC) and the Latter Day Saints Charity last week.

The beneficiaries from Malasiqu, Pozorrubio, San Fabian, Calasiao towns and Alaminos City received either a wheelchair or crutch or walker based on the assessment of the beneficiaries last year.

The wheelchairs were customized with attention to beneficiary’s comfort and posture.

Reynald Codiamat, ITRMC physical therapist, said the devices were customized to enable children who have physical disabilities to go to school while those who have jobs can still work”

Since only indigent PWDs and seniors who could still sit were qualified and the assistive devices were provided free. Family members, friends or relatives of the beneficiaries are requested to do hours of community service in return.

Codiamat said for wheelchairs, 40 hours community service were asked from family members or friends of beneficiary; 10 hours each for crutch or walker.

The project was initiated by Malasiqui Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) and the Malasiqui Police Station in support to the Association of South East Asian Nation Enabling Masterplan 2025. (Helen Martin)
