Two firecracker victims lost their fingers
A 27-year old man from Barangay Zaragoza, Bolinao and a 10-year old boy from Bonuan Boquig, Dagupan lost some of their fingers from firecracker explosions.
According to Dr. Noel Manaois, chief of the Health Management Service Office at the Region 1 Medical Center, these were the two cases of amputation handled by doctors of R1MC on New Year’s Day even as seven others treated for blast injuries without need of amputation.
The 25-year old from Bolinao lost four of fingers in his right hand after the banned Goodbye Philippines firecracker exploded in his hand on New Year’s Day. He was reportedly drunk and also suffered blast injuries in his face and body.
He was made to pay for his hospitalization and treatment.
Meanwhile, the 10-year old lost his right thumb after picking up an unexploded powerful firecracker that exploded in his hand and was considered a passive victim and was not made to pay for his treatment.
The R1MC treated 12 victims on New Year’s Day, less than the number treated last year, nine of whom were considered passive users and five were active users.
Except for the two who needed longer days of confinement, the other firecracker victims were considered out-patients and went home after their treatment.
Manaois ruled out as a case of stray bullet injury suffered by a four-year old girl from Barangay Pogo Grande, Dagupan. She was hit in the back by a fragment of the metal roof of the family’s house that fell.
Manaois said that only 13 of 14 injured by firecrackers were injected with anti-tetanus toxoid. One 25-year old man from Barangay Pantal, Dagupan, refused and his wound was merely treated.
According to Dr. Manaois, the youngest victim of firecracker from Dec. 21 to January 1 was a three-year old baby and the oldest was a 40-year old.
R1MC also admitted 22 victims of vehicular accidents in different parts of Pangasinan. A boy died.
Most of the vehicular accidents were reportedly caused by drunk drivers (Leonardo Micua)
