THE motive behind the slaying of retired Police Brigadier General Marlou Chan in Barangay Nalsian, Calasiao on January 9 could not yet be established, but the Regional Special Investigation Task Group “Chan” formed by Police Brigadier General Joel Orduna, police regional director, is determined to find it out.

This was assured by P/Lt. Colonel Norman Florentino, deputy police provincial director for administration of Pangasinan, after the two persons of interest have been identified: Edwin Ferrer of Binmaley and businessman Ashok Vasandani of Dagupan.

Florentino said Ferrer became a person of interest when he was seen near the scene of the crime and in fact helped the driver of General Chan rush him to the Villaflor Memorial General Hospital in Dagupan.

On the other hand, Vasandani, the other person of interest, was tagged by several witnesses as the one who General Cham had a coffee with at a restaurant along Jose Venecia Highway in Calasiao.

Asked by newsmen if Chan had other appointments in Pangasinan that day, Florentino said, quoting initial investigation report: “Wala na. Nakipag-meet lang siya kay Mr. Vasandani“.

In the case of Ferrer who was subjected to a background check by the Regional Special Investigation Task Group “Chan”, was found to have a pending case on file for Violation of Republic Act 1051 before the court.

According to Florentino, Ferrer is an alleged gun-for-hire.

RSITG Chan is headed by P/Col. Ismael Yu, with members from the Regional Investigation Division, Pangasinan Police Provincial Office, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO).

Based on the information of the driver of Chan, they had to travel from Manila to Calasiao that day as Chan had an appointment with someone, whom he did not identify.

Although he refused to discuss further details of the case that is a subject of an ongoing investigation, Florentino said the killing was the work of professional guns-for-hire. (Leonardo Micua)
