Time to be merry, mindful and careful 

‘TIS time to be merry, indeed. 

Thousands of families are reuniting and bonding in our communities with their countless visitors and friends during the holiday season.  

The occasion calls for carefree and exciting environment. It already started with seeming endless shopping time for family members and friends while homes prepare for holiday meals for days and ends.  But as we move happily with the holiday spirit, our families and our communities should be reminded to be more on guard against those issues that can spoil our holidays. 

Let’s be mindful of street criminals on every corner waiting to jump on the opportunity to ransack our homes and our vehicles. Be mindful of the food we prepare and consume for serious health risks. Be mindful of swimming and touring activities in popular destinations where accidents can occur. 

Above all, let’s be mindful of the welfare of each member of the family as we relish and enjoy each moment with everyone, that we make everyone experience the best of Christmas spirit can bring this season.

Good enough

BROTHERS Andal and Zaldy Ampatuan et al. will, barring unforeseen events, rot in jail after Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes of Quezon City found them guilty on December 19 in the grizzly Maguindanao Massacre that claimed 58 lives on Nov. 23, 2009.  When mowed down by high-powered guns in one of the most senseless crimes against humanity, the hapless victims were on their way to Shariff Aguak to file the candidacy of Esmael Mangudadatu for governor of Maguindanao to challenge Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr., who died while in jail.  A total of 32 journalists were in that ill-fated convoy, marking their death as the world’s biggest mass murder of media workers in history.  So palpably barbaric were the killers that they didn’t spare the lives of the occupants of a vehicle that was merely passing through.  The decision may not be perfect as 57 others were acquitted on grounds of reasonable doubt.   But seen in its totality, we say it was good enough as the verdict ended a clan’s mad rule lasting generations.  

Always, nothing is perfect in this imperfect world.
