Coastal towns wiped out by flooding by 2050?

AN article by Phys.0rg entitled: “Climate-fueled flooding to imperil 300 million by 2050” is a prediction that cannot be taken lightly, not by Pangasinan in particular because it has a long coastline.

It cited scientists’ warning that severe ”flooding made worse by climate change, no matter how aggressively humanity curbs carbon emission”. Based on its data, the prediction will likely impact most on San Fabian, Dagupan City, Binmaley, Lingayen, Labrador, Sual, Alaminos City, Anda and Bolinao, as the most vulnerable being situated nearest the sea.

For obvious reasons, the article mentioned only Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taizhou, Surabaya, Dhaka, Mumbai, Ho Chi Minh City and Osaka as Asian cities vulnerable to flooding.

It is time for the best minds in environment and engineering in the province to be called to a summit meeting to help draft response measures to mitigate the impact of such a prediction on Pangasinan. They can take off from the article’s assertion: “Using a form of artificial intelligence known as neural networks, the new research corrects ground elevation data that has up to now vastly underestimated the extent to which coastal zones are subject to flooding during high tide or major storms Sea-level projections have not changed,” said co-author Ben Strauss, chief scientist and CEO of Climate Central, a US-based non-profit research group.”

2050 is just 30 years away!

Finally as VP, not as opposition leader?

EVEN if pundits may have been quick to label the offer of President Duterte to Vice President Robredo to co-chair the Inter-agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs was, or could be a political move to contain her, VP Leni should take it as the golden opportunity to show her mettle and sincerity to help protect the masses from the clutches of the drug syndicates.

Sadly, we note that her preferred initial sound bite in accepting the appointment was, as perhaps expected, full of political blah blah. She was still mouthing what was being fed her by her circle of sycophants. Let us pray that the vice president will soon realize that the post offered to her is about giving her a chance to be a national leader and not as a leader of the opposition.
