SAN CARLOS – Passion, indeed, leads people further and farther.

This was the  eality for 19-year-old Nikko Andrew T. Gautane, a San Carlenian who is set to capture not only the title, but the hearts of everyone through photography as he battles in the Thailandia Photo Contest 2019 on October 8 at Bangkok, Thailand.

A 2nd-year Bachelor of Arts in Communication student at the PHINMA University of Pangasinan and at the same time, is a freelance photographer in the province.

He told the PUNCH he never really expected for things like this to happen, recalling how he started with just a digicam when he was in first year high school to engage in photography which he considers his passion in life.

After his high school graduation, he was surprised by his papa Andronico with an SLR camera. From then on, he continued his artistic journey.

Nikko took photos of friends and family initially until it became his part-time job while studying in college.

“Nakakatulong s’ya sa daily living ko… Nag-start ako sa P300 na fee sa events, then nag-aral pa lalo. At habang tumatagal, mas lalong dumarami ‘yung opportunities at mas lalong maraming naniniwala sa kakayahan kong kumuha ng mga larawan,” he said.

Despite being young, he experienced a breakthrough in his career when well-known Pangasinense fashion designer, Rjay Cruz collaborated with him.

He was compared with other professional photographers, but he took every criticism as constructive that enabled him to improve on his skills

On October 7, Nikko and other Asian delegates from Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, South Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam will arrive at the venue and battle on the next day.

Among all photographers from 17 Asian countries competing, who will be the best? Will it be Nikko Andrew T. Gautane? Let’s pray and hope for the best. (Melody Valenton)
