THE Mangaldan government led various government and private groups last week in launching its “Save Old Mangaldan River, Clean-Up Drive and Tree Planting” as a commitment to bring back to life the river and make the town greener, healthier, safer.

Mayor Marilyn Lambino said efforts already started with clearing the river of water lilies, plastics and other wastes thrown into the river along Barangays Poblacion, Nibaliw, Tebag, Salaan, Pogo, Palua, Bantayan to Bateng.

The river exits between Bonuan, Dagupan City and San Fabian.

Lambino said 30 years ago, the river was very clean and people were still enjoying swimming and fishing in it.

She said after the clearing and cleaning of the river is completed, the ultimate objective is to set up a water treatment and sewerage system in Mangaldan.

During the initial clean-up drive, more than 180 delegates of APO United International Organization Inc from different provinces trooped to Mangaldan to support the program.

About five truckloads of water lilies, plastics, tires and dead fish were hauled because there is no oxygen in the river, CEZA Administrator Raul Lambino said who together with the mayor walked through the river to help remove the meter high water lilies.

He said it was the first time for the Old Mangaldan River, fed by spring water, to be cleared in a decade or more.

Private organizations were tapped and assigned sections of the river for regular clearing and cleaning, among them, Apo United, United Lights of Pangasinan Inc.

“My dream for the river is to bring back fishes again and for people to enjoy swimming again in the river,” Mayor Lambino said. (PhilStar Wire Service)
