“Ang sports ay parang buhay na dugo’t pawis ang pinupuhunan para marating ang magandang kinabukasan.”

This was stressed by Governor Amado I. Espino, III as he lauded the performance of Pangasinan athletes in the 2019 Batang Pinoy Luzon Qualifying Leg and Palarong Pambansa 2019.

Governor Espino also led the awarding of cash incentives to 179 athletes amounting to Php530,000 during a simple awarding ceremony at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center on July 19.

Palarong Pambansa athletes received cash incentives amounting to Php2000 (bronze medalist), Php3,000 (silver medalist) and Php5,000 (gold medalist).

On the other hand, cash incentives of Php1,000 (bronze medalist), Php2,000 (silver medalist) and Php3,000 (gold medalist) were given to the athletes and their coaches of the Batang Pinoy.

The cash incentives awarded by the provincial government is on top of the P1-millon financial grant conferred by the Philippine Sports Commission to the Pangasinan delegation after clinching the fifth spot in the overall ranking of the 2018 Batang Pinoy National Championships.

Governor Espino noted that the financial grant will be used in sports programs that will benefit the athletes and will further boost their sports prowess.

He also assured the provincial government’s constant support to various sports development thrusts for young Pangasinan athletes.

As such, he bared that the provincial government considers conducting a provincewide sports competition to test the sports prowess of young Pangasinenses of each town and cities of the province.

“Maganda rin na mag-celebrate ng sports activities na tayo mismo na magkababayan ang nagkikita-kita,” he said noting that this endeavor calls for strong partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and all local government units (LGUs).

Asssisting Governor Espino were Provincial Sports Development and Management Council (PSDMC) Executive Director Modesto Operania, San Carlos City Vice Mayor Joseres “Bogs” Resuello and Pangasinan Division II Schools Division Superintendent Donato Balderas, Jr.

Team Pangasinan bagged 17 gold medals in the Palarong Pambansa in the following sports disciplines: athletics high jump, athletics, table tennis and taekwondo among others.

Palarong Pambansa gold medalists include: Anthony Peralta (3 golds), Jeanet Solomon (3 golds), J-Ann Sanchez (2 golds), Kent Bryan Celeste, Liezel Parizal, Kezia Wyne Rafael, James Oronza, Dante Camaso, Jomar Carido, Allan Sanchez, Rachelle Garcia, and Mark Anthony Laplana.

Meanwhile, Team Pangasinan collected 42 gold medals in the Batang Pinoy Luzon qualifying leg dominating the following sports disciplines: archery, athletics, basketball girls team event, karatedo, lawn tennis, table tennis, taekwondo and beach volleyball.

Athletes who earned gold medals in the Luzon qualifying leg are: Zhyriene Shayne Bastasa (4 golds), Jershey Salem (4 golds);  Rufo Aidan Raguine (2 golds), Justin Angelo Muñoz (2 golds) Gennalyn Estrada, Ana Marie Eugenio, Redz Geronomino, Christian Lance Sibucao, Irish Vergel Cabanayan, Blessery Montemayor, Kirk Dion Agustin, Exequiel Marie Jucutan, J-Ann Sanchez, Ericka Claudette Edrosolan, Alexander Joseph Calpito, Milson Janry Galzote, and Jayvee Perlaoan. Other gold medalists include: Sheika Jolie, Hailey Mae Casem, Christine Joy De Guzman, Angelica Licos, Roshelle Lumibao, Rosie Palaruan, Aisha Mae Sebastian, Kate Shaira Esperanzate, Layza Joy Bautista, Katie Cyndi Aquino, Yasmine Ayones and Princess Jamaica Argel. /Shiella Mae C.
