TO MINIMIZE EFFECTS OF HIGH TIDE

THE Dagupan City Engineering Office (CEO) will soon construct temporary floodgates along Dagupan’s river tributaries to reduce the adverse effects of high tide in the city.

This, after City Mayor Marc Brian Lim met with the CEO and the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) to come up with a solution against flooding.

City Engineer Virginia Rosario said the soon-to-be-built flood gates will be closed during high tide to prevent the entry of water from the Lingayen Gulf and minimize high tide’s adverse effects in the city.

“We will also implement a food-for-work scheme to involve barangay residents in cleaning the creeks and drainage canals in their areas”, said Rosario.

Dagupan City, with only one meter above sea level elevation and surrounded by bodies of waters with 14 creeks and seven rivers, the city has virtually become the catch basin for flood waters.

A week before assuming the mayoralty position, Lim travelled to Navotas City in Metro Manila to learn about the city’s mitigating measures it adopted to contain serious flooding.
