Planting on 1,000 hectares of public land suspended

THE plan to plant seedlings of fruit bearing trees in some 1,000 hectares of public land in Pangasinan has been suspended owing to forecast of the weather bureau that El Niño will likely continue in the next 5 months.

Raymundo Gayo, provincial environment and natural resources officer, said Tuesday that the decision to suspend planting activities will save money and efforts.

“For the whole year of 2019, it’s no planting,” Gayo said.

Since PAGASA predicts that the unusually warm weather since November 2018 is expected to become a full-blown El Niño, it means the country will experience a long drought,” he said.

He said in Region 1, there is a short rainy season window.

“We’re after the survival rate (of seedlings planted), “ Gayo said as he pointed out that this is a first time to be adopted in Pangasinan.

He said the effort instead will be focused on protecting all the plantations because the survival rate of planted seedlings in a drought period is not less than 85 percent.

He said the concept is good “as we are protecting value for money”.

He said the people’s organizations will continue to take care of those planted since 2015.

“Planting of seedlings will now be weather forecast-based, “ Gayo said. (PhilStar Wire Service)
