PH Space Agency offers new opportunities – Toff de V

District Rep. Christopher de Venecia said he is proud to have fought and pushed
for the creation of the Philippine Space Agency after the Senate passed Senate
Bill 1983 that seeks to establish a space development policy and create said
agency.
De Venecia, who was among the co-authors of a counterpart bill in the Lower
House, said it will pave the way for Filipino space scientists, space science
researchers, and astronomers to cooperate in developing the field of
astronomical science in the country.
“It will also help us in global representations on space agreements and
arbitrations,” he said.
He added, “It
will also help in improving our disaster management by providing accurate
information that allows early warning signals and as well as quick and reliable
communication during recovery and relief operations.”
De Venecia said
the new technologies can also improve the country’s production and
profitability in agribusiness, preserve the environment, and improve urban
planning, transportation, and communication networks.
He said this is “a long overdue” measure that is longing for its passage as the
country’s neighboring countries already have their space agency.
He expects the space agency to start setting up its operations this year since an ocular inspection in the proposed site of the space agency inside the Clark Economic Zone has been done.
De Venecia said
he started talking to Naoki Okumura of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency two
years ago and learned how grand the technology is.
The proposed law on the creation of the Philippine Space Agency is expected to
serve as the country’s strategic roadmap for space development and propel the
country to be space capable in the next decade. (PhilStar Wire Service)
