18th Reg’l Skills Competition in P’sinan begins
LINGAYEN — The 18th Regional Skills Competition (RSC) spearheaded by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) opened on May 7.
TESDA Director General Isidro Lapena, who traces his roots in Urdaneta City, exhorted the participants from affiliate institutions in the region to do their best in the regional finals for adjudicators.
Winners will represent the region in the zonal (Luzon) contest held
prior to the national finals.
“The RSC is TESDA’s way of elevating further the standard of excellence in
skills training,” said Lapena during the RSC opening program held at the
Provincial Training and Development Center in Lingayen.
Representing Governor Amado I. Espino, III in the
RSC was Provincial Administrator Nimrod Camba, who noted the ‘functional
literacy’ provided by TESDA to its stakeholders.
“Functional literacy provided by TESDA prepares
people to land a job or to establish a private business venture,” Atty. Camba
said.
TESDA Deputy DG Gladys Rosales reiterated the
purpose of having the annual skills contests not to showcase the learnings of
the participants, but to level up in standards of participating technical –
vocational institutions in skills trainings.
Rosales said he is optimistic that the Philippine contingent to be led by TESDA
will deliver a solid performance in the ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) in
coming years, giving credit to the high level of experiential training provided
by TESDA and its accredited tech-voc schools to its trainees.
Philippines contingent bagged one silver and two bronze medals in last
year’s ASC. A bronze medal was won by Maxima Skills Training Center based in Dagupan
City.
Present during the RSC opening were Provincial
Employment Services Officer Alex Ferrer, TESDA Acting Regional Director Socorro
Galanto, and Provincial Directors from four provinces. (PIO/MGNO)
