More bangus eggs spawned during hot season

WHILE Dagupeõs worry about the supply of bangus during the onset of El Niño, the contrary is actually happening.

More bangus eggs are being spawned during the intense summer heat at the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) center in Barangay Bonuan Binloc, Dagupan City.

Dr. Westly Rosario, center chief of the BFAR here and in-charge of the National Bangus Fry Sufficiency Program, showed data Wednesday that the production of bangus eggs in their hatchery is much higher because of the hot temperature.

Since April, a total of 6,563,860 bangus eggs have been spawned in their six tanks with 30 male and 30 female bangus breeders. “They prefer to produce eggs when it is hot,” Rosario said.

He said BFAR’s bangus hatchery now is full of bangus eggs and they worry that they have no other place for others.

He said that when it is hot, bangus has better appetite and eat more, and when

they eat more, they weigh heavier. But what he said is worrisome is when the fishpond where they are raised is shallow and knee-deep, its water easily gets hot.

“It’s okay if it does not rain because if it rains, temperature shock happens,” he said.

He said that a change in temperature and salinity hurt the bangus, adding that algae, planktons and other organisms also die. “It will result in “gataw or tangok”, a local term used to describe bangus that float dead, he said.

Rosario said if a fishpond is at least one meter deep, bangus will not be affected as  much because the fish seeks its own temperature requirement like staying at the bottom.

“Overall, the summer heat is favorable to the fish, like bangus, except those in shallow fishponds,” he added.

However, he advised bangus growers to decrease the density of their bangus in their fishpond for better growth and cautioned against red organisms.

“Areas that had experienced red tide was due to high salinity because water was not flushed out in the absence of rain,” he said. (PhilStar Wire Service)
