DCWD: No joint venture with Manila Water

THE request of the Manila Water, which is supplying water on parts of Metro Manila, for an exploratory talk with the Dagupan Water District (DCWD) will no longer happen after the latter declined the unsolicited proposal of the latter for a joint venture with DCWD.

This was contained in a notice to the public on April 16 signed by Engr. Adelfo Valle, DCWD general manager, to assure its customers of uninterrupted service and its employees that there will be no changes in their employment.

In his letter, Valle said DCWD will remain a government-owned and controlled corporation (GOCC) and will fulfill its mandate “to provide sufficient and quality water supply in its area of jurisdiction.”

DCWD Chairman of the Board Liberato Reyna Jr. earlier assured the employees in a meeting with them last April 12 that the board will never agree to a joint venture with Manila Water.

The meeting was attended by Mayor Belen Fernandez who also assured that as long as she remains as mayor of Dagupan City, she will oppose any joint venture of DCWD with Manila Water.

In his letter to DCWD consumers, Valle cited the current water shortage crisis being experienced in Metro Manila that prompted the Senate and the House of Representatives to conduct separate probes on Manila Water’s operations as reason to decline the unsolicited proposal of Manila Water.

The DCWD will not only continue to perform its functions but will improve its operations to optimize the quality of service that Dagupeños deserve, Valle said

To date, DCWD is set to extend its service up to the island villages of Carael and Calmay across the Calmay River by laying underwater pipes that will convey potable water to these villages, connected to a pumping station in Barangay Lucao.  (Leonardo Micua)
