BFAR says Sual coastal water still safe
BUREAU of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 1 dispelled fears that the coastal water of Sual is contaminated by fish cage operations after it issued its bulletin stating results of a recent test that it’s safe from any contamination and pollution.
Its Bulletin No. 1 Series of 2019 dated January 14 on the result of BFAR-1’s regular water quality monitoring in Sual, it reported that the average reading of all water parameters such as dissolved oxygen, ammonia nitrogen, salinity, temperature, pH and nitrite nitrogen in all sampling stations are within desirable levels for fish culture.
BFAR Region Director Lilibeth Signey said the condition needs to be sustained to ensure productivity of the resource for aquaculture.
BFAR asked Sual’s municipal government to disseminate the information to all fish producers for their guidance and to implement immediate measures that will ensure strict observance of proper waste disposal.
Sual Mayor Roberto Arcinue said the operations of 750 fish cages are permitted by DENR in accordance with Local Fishery Code of Sual adding that the operation of 750 fish cages contributes P10 Million in annual local business tax, water rental and daily auxiliary invoice.
He said sixty metric tons of bangus is being harvested daily and delivered in the markets of Pangasinan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan and Navotas. (Nora Dominguez)
