Alejano: Hanjin takeover by China dangerous to PH
A TAKE-over of Hanjin Industries by the Philippine government will augur well for the country’s fleet modernization program.
This was underscored by Magdalo Partylist Rep. Gary Alejandro, as he reiterated his support for the suggestion of Defense Sec. Delfin Lorenzana during a talk with The PUNCH after addressing the People’s Educational Forum at the Abong na Alumni at the Dagupan City National High School (DCNHS) on January 23.
He insisted this is the better option than to allow China to take over the South Korean shipbuilding company, or by any company from China, in Subic, Zambales which is dangerous.
He said Hanjin’s strategic location, besides being inside Subic but also faces the West Philippine Sea, could be used by China as its staging area to taking over the entire Philippines.
“That is why we must not allow China, even by a private company from China, to take over Hanjin,” he added.
Alejano pointed out there is no such thing as privately-owned companies in China. All these, he added, are taking directions from the Communist Party of China.
He said the Philippine government can take over Hanjin initially then slowly divest it to Philippine companies and to other foreign companies friendly to PH.
The shipyard, he said could be used
by the country in building its ships that could modernize vessels of the Coast
Guard as well as the Philippine Navy, which is already in the pipeline.
If the government can do it, both the Coast Guard and the Navy will be the
first clients of the Filipino company that will take over Hanjin.
Hanjin recently announced it is laying off its workers because its foreign
creditors failed to pay prompting the company to borrow money from Philippine
banks.
The proposal, he said is in consonant with a bill he filed
in Congress directing the government to pursue a self-reliant defense
policy, that the Philippines should rely on its own capability and resources in
developing its own defense strategies and not be dependent on other
countries.
He said a take-over of Hanjin by the government will enable country to pursue
its fleet modernization program.
He warned that the over-dependence of President Duterte on China may lead to the government handing over Hanjin to China. (Leonardo Micua)
