Espino to expand training programs for more athletes
PANGASINAN SPORTS ACADEMY
LINGAYEN—Gov. Amado Espino III vowed
to expand the program and activities of the Pangasinan Sports Academy (PSA) he
launched on December 9, 2017 to provide year-round training to Pangasinan
athletes to fully prepare them for regional, national and international
competitions.
Espino told newsmen that the PSA will take more athletes in its second year of
operation to train not only on the initial 14 sports disciplines that it offers
but also on additional sports disciplines that athletes of Team Pangasinan are
actively competing in.
PSA initially took 171 athletes under its wings for training in athletics,
archery, arnis, basketball, boxing, taekwondo, chess, swimming, badminton,
table tennis, karatedo, volleyball and sepak takraw.
The PSA was a vision of former Gov. Amado Espino Jr., now Fifth District
representative and implemented by his son, Gov. Espino III and who completed
all the sports infrastructures in Pangasinan, including the renovation and
expansion of the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC), home of the
PSA.
The PSA is being managed by the Pangasinan Sports Development and Management Council (PSDMC) headed by Modesto Operania, Pangasinan Sports director.
Espino said P10 million is being allotted yearly by the provincial government to bankroll the operations of the PSA but he said he is ready to put additional funds to support training of more athletes.
PSA’s expense budget includes honoraria for topnotch coaches and trainors, allowance of athletes, meals and transportation of athletes and coaches.
“We are happy to announce that the Philippine Sports Commission sent us one million pesos worth of training equipment, which is the prize won by the province for finishing strong in the last National Batang Pinoy games,” Espino said.
Team Pangasinan placed fifth overall in the regional competition held in Baguio and made a strong finish in the national competition.
“Imagine, a young athlete coming home to Pangasinan with four gold medals. We honored her by giving P5,000 for each gold medal or P20,000 for all the four gold medals,” Espino said.
He said on his second term of office, he will seek to establish a new sports arena for indoor games with a seating capacity of 7,500 spectators the moment a site could be found,
He is eyeing that this edifice will rise either in Bugallon or Binmaley. (Leonardo Micua)
