DTI cites 17 stores for violations

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) issued notices of violations to 17 stores in the region for selling substandard construction materials after an intensified monitoring of construction and hardware stores was launched by DTI-Region 1’s Enforcement Team’s in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan.

Inspected by the team with representatives from the angle bar, steel bar, wire and cable, and flat glass industries were 68 lumber, hardware and construction firms in the region  on November 13-16.

In Pangasinan, all the 12 firms visited/inspected were compliant, said Joyce Segui-Sabado, the regional information officer.

Violations noted were underweight steel bars, no label for flat glass and thin angle bars.

The inspection was launched in line with the DTI’s Bureau of Product Standards campaign on construction safety, the department has advised contractors and consumers to ensure the safety of the building and construction materials they purchase from their suppliers and hardware stores.

The absence of the required labeling and PS and ICC marks indicates were proofs of the substandard materials.

Owners/operators of erring establishments found violating the Consumer Act of the Philippines and RA 4109 or the Standards Law are penalized with fine up to P300,000 and the cancellation of any DTI-issued permit or license while surrendered and confiscated items amounting to more than P700,000 are subject for destruction once the cases have been finalized.
