LINGAYEN—The provincial board has declared the Provincial Capitol Building as a heritage site in Pangasinan.

Board members approved a resolution on Monday for the declaration and agreed for the provision of funds for its preservation.

In a resolution authored by Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim Jr, it said that the province recognizes the inherent symbolism and historic and cultural significance of the Provincial Capitol because the structure represents an important historic site and cultural resource.

“The province of Pangasinan recognizes the need to continue to preserve, promote and protect the historic and cultural resources of the province, beginning with the Provincial Capitol Building,” the resolution said.

The Provincial Capitol Building is replete with historic significance whose construction started in 1917 and was completed in 1918 during the American colonial period. It suffered the ravage of war during World War II but it was reconstructed in 1948.

It cited the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ declaration of the Provincial Capitol Building as one of the eight Architectural Treasures of the Philippines due to its preserved and maintained neoclassical architectural beauty and prestige, the resolution said.

The Provincial Capitol Building will mark its 100 years of significant existence in 2018, not only as the past and present seat of the provincial government but also as a structure filled with historic and aesthetic values, he added.

Calimlim said that in order to commemorate and immortalize the significant and cultural milestone of the Provincial Capitol Building’s 100 years of historic and culture, there is an essential need to declare it as a heritage site in the province of Pangasinan. (With PhilStar Wire Service)
