THE province of Pangasinan will pilot the state-of- the-art Voter Registration Verification System (VRVS), which verifies the name of the voter through the print of his forefinger, in addition to using the Voter Counting Machines (VCMs).

Provincial Election Officer Marino Salas said only Pangasinan was chosen to pilot the VRVS machine which has a built-in fingerprint taker in the region.

“We are happy to announce that our province was selected as among the few provinces and only one in Northern Luzon to pilot the VRVS,” Salas told the KBP Forum..

The VRVS requires the voter to insert his/ her forefinger to display the name and other data of the voter on file with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on the screen before a ballot is issued. The VCM thereafter will accept the accomplished ballot.

Salas said the current system of voting still requires voter to verify his/her name from the list in the hands of members of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs).

He added that the process will not only expedite voting process but will purge flying voters or fake voters and also determine if a voter has already cast his vote..

Comelec, he said, bought some 30,000 units of VRVS machines to be distributed to all the pilot areas of the country.

Pangasinan has  the biggest voting population in Region 1 and the third biggest in the entire country with 1,799,000 voters as of the last barangay election.

The number is expected to increase to more than 1.8 million if the 138, 897 who applied
for registration from July 2 to September 29, 2018 will be added after verification.

“At first, I  thought the pilot area is only Dagupan City but I was informed by our regional director during a command conference in La Union on Wednesday that Pangasinan will pilot the VRVS,” Salas said.

Teachers who are members of the BEI will be trained on how to use the VRVS machines.

A demonstration on the machine will be held weeks before the election to teach the voters of Pangasinan how to verify their personal data through the machine. (Leonardo Micua).
