1,400 teachers join National Teachers’ Day

SOME 1,400 public school teachers and employees of the Department of Education (DepEd) Dagupan joined the kick off celebration of the World and National Teachers’ Day on September 20 at the Mayor’s Pavilion, Tondaligan Park in Bonuan Gueset.

The ceremony, on the theme of “Gurong Pilipino: Turo Mo, Kinabukasan Ko”, formally opened with a thanksgiving mass celebrated by Reverend Fr. Jonathan Songcuan.

A Zumba dance activity was also held, participated in by each school district.

Chief Education Supervisor Dr. Venus Maria Estonillo of the Curriculum Implementation Division, underscored the responsibility of teachers as second parents to the students in her speech.

Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Dr. Lorna G. Bugayong and Assistant SDS Dr. Lourdes Servito congratulated the teachers following Schools Division Office (SDO) Dagupan’s ISO 9001:2015 certification given by the World Certifying body.

Dr. Bugayong said the certificate will be formally presented the city’s celebration of World Teacher’s Day.

“We have the noblest profession. We are all regarded as human engineers because we mold the young, delicate minds of our children. That is our calling and our mission,” added Dr. Bugayong.

Meanwhile, Mayor Belen T. Fernandez paid tribute to all teachers, DepEd officials and education stakeholders for being the city government’s active partners in bringing better futures for the Dagupeno children.

“Today, on your special day, we recognize your efforts and sacrifices just to make sure that our children will have better futures,” said Fernandez.

She thanked DepEd Dagupan for opening the multi-storey buildings in various public schools that sheltered majority of the evacuees when Typhoon “Ompong” lashed the city last weekend.

Fernandez said that school buildings accommodated nearly 95% of the evacuees, that resulted in zero casualty in the city during the typhoon.

The city mayor gave a token of appreciation to outstanding teacher couple Rhemus and Mary Jean Siapno of Barangay Bacayao Norte, whose house was adjudged the city’s model Privately Hosted Evacuation Center (PHEC).

Both math educators at the Dagupan City National High School, the Siapno family regularly sheltered an average of at least 38 families or 100 individuals from Sitio Boquig in Bacayao Norte during the recent calamities that hit the city since July.

Mayor Fernandez also bared her plans to present awards of recognition to organizations and individuals who helped ensure and prioritize the safety of Dagupenos during the recent calamity.

A fun run called “Takbo Para sa Guro” will be held on September 29, with public school teachers, students, parents and education stakeholders participating in the event, to be followed by a culminating activity of World Teacher’s Day on October 3 at CSI Stadia. (Verdelle De Vera/CIO)
