Stranded, wounded dolphin back to the sea after treatment
ALAMINOS CITY–A rescued rough-toothed dolphin returned to the sea on August 21, about a kilometer away from the Hundred Islands National Park here, after its successful 50-day rehabilitation.
A post from the Facebook page of Mayor Arthur Celeste said the dolphin (Steno bredanensis) was named “Tala” which was found stranded at the Bolo Beach on July 2 and was treated and rehabilitated at the BFAR station in Lucap wharf here.
Celeste said “taking care of and releasing to the wild this rescued or stranded marine animal that has fully recovered from injuries or ailments is part of the city’s thrust of protecting marine creatures and heightening its conservation efforts along with the protection of the country’s first declared national park and a protected area-the Hundred Islands National Park”.
Celeste lauded the joint efforts of Dr. Lemnuel Aragones, director of UP-Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology (UP-IESM) along with Dr. Leo Jonathan Suarez from the Ocean Adventure-Subic and BFAR Regional Director Lilibeth Signey, the city government, in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network for the successful release of ‘Tala’ to her natural habitat.
