11 deaths, 52 leptospirosis cases recorded

LINGAYEN—Pangasinan has recorded 52 leptospirosis cases as of July 9 with 11 deaths.

The Provincial Health Office’s (PHO) records showed a 27 percent increase in number of cases compared to the 2017 data of the same period which had 41 cases.

Commonly affected were 35 to 39 years old and 50 to 54 years old. Majority of cases were male with 44 cases.

The towns and cities placed under PHO’s watch list for leptospirosis are Sual with 4 cases, Manaoag (3) and Alaminos City, Binmaley, Bolinao, Laoac, Mangaldan, San Fabian, Sta. Barbara, Umingan and Urdaneta City with 2 cases each.

Those who died due to leptospirosis were in Anda, Bolinao, Calasiao, San Carlos City and San Nicolas with one casualty each while Sual, Manaoag and Dagupan City reported 2 deaths each.

Last year, seven died of leptospirosis in Pangasinan covering January to July 9 period.

Most of the cases this year happened in January with 16 cases, followed by June with 10 cases, April and May with eight cases each, February with seven, March with two cases and July with one case. (Eva Visperas)
