‘No classes under a tree’ in region, DEPED says
MANGALDAN—Region 1 is ready to welcome the more than one million students in elementary and secondary in public schools for the school opening on June 4, Department of Education Regional Director Alma Ruby Torio has declared.
“There will definitely be no classes under the tree in Region 1,” Torio added although she said the actual number of enrollees will only be known on June 4.
She said the regional office was expecting an increase of about 3 percent in enrollees this school year 2018-2019.
New teachers hired for Region 1 have started reporting on May 25. As early as November, the allocation for new teachers has been given in 14 divisions in Region 1, she said.
Torio also said there were “enough classrooms” across the region.
“There are still some ongoing constructions of classrooms but these must be finished in time for school opening,” she said.
She said in case of a lack of classroom, there must be contingency measures like using possible space like a multi-purpose hall, covered court, among others.
But with the construction of multi-storey senior high school buildings, “I don’t think there will be serious lack of classrooms”, Torio said.
Torio expressed elation over the multi-sectoral support for the Brigada Eskwela that had its regional launch in San Carlos City on May 28 graced by Undersecretary Tonisito Umali. (Eva Visperas)
DepEd Pangasinan 1 ready
Meanwhile, Carmina Gutierrez, chief educational supervisor of DEPED Pangasinan 1, confirmed that the 15,000 teaching force in all schools in the division will be ready to receive the 348,791 pupils and students enrolled in kinder, elementary, junior and senior high school on June 4.
Gutierrez said the number of hired teachers in Pangasinan 1 was “good enough” for the present ratio of 1 teacher for every 45 students.
But she added that additional teachers will be hired to achieve the target 1:25 ratio of teachers to students in every classroom and to avoid overcrowding in classrooms.
She admitted that there are still some schools that will have to do double shifting of classes, especially in integrated schools while school buildings are still under construction.
Meanwhile, DepEd Pangasinan 1 announced that there are no mandatory fees imposed in public schools. Contributions for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts movements will remain on a voluntary basis. (Nora Dominguez)
