MORE than 60 “Manlingkor Ya Kalangweran” officials took a trip around the city’s river through the Island Tours Cruise on June 19.

On board two uniquely designed tourist boats, one styled like that seen on a Chinese pagoda and another on an American steamboat, the youth leaders were able to have a closer look at the thriving aquaculture industry of the city as well as the development of the river system.

The experience also enabled the youth to feel not just the situation of the river but also to see for themselves the city’s marginal fisherfolk and their livelihood.

In that occasion, Young City Mayor Jalen Kody Fernandez, together with Young City Vice Mayor Iris Javert Jovellanos and the Young City Councilors and officials, joined Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, City Agriculturist Emma Molina and One-Stop Business Center Officer Randolf Ubando in installing business plates in authorized fish cages.

The young officials were also able to sample fresh oysters from the river.

Following the Island Tour Cruise, Young City Mayor Jalen Kody Fernandez and Young City Agriculturist Aaliyah Kyla Solomon accompanied Mayor Fernandez and Punong Barangay Marcelino Fernandez of Barangay Lucao during a consultation with the fisherfolk at the barangay hall.

The fisherfolk who successfully obtained their Aquaculture Lease Agreements were also issued their business permits that would allow them to operate their fishing structures.

The river’s rehabilitation is one of Mayor Belen T. Fernandez’s main priorities in the city, as she already dismantled over 900 illegal fishing structures and subsequently effected the rearrangement of authorized fishing structures, contributing greatly to the river’s improvement.

Seeing the river and meeting with the fisherfolk firsthand, the youth officials were given new perspective in fulfilling their duties as young city officials of Dagupan. (Verdelle De Vera/CIO)
