San Roque Dam water level still stable

FOR POWER AND IRRIGATION

THE volume of water now impounded at the San Roque Multi-Purpose Dam in San Manuel remains sufficient for both power generation and irrigation, according to the National Power Corporation (Napocor).

Napocor’s Bernadette Rivero, speaking at a KBP Forum last week, said the elevation of water at the San Roque Dam reservoir as of 8 a.m., May 24, was 228.96 meters above sea level (AMSL), which she described as “still a comfortable level”.

The San Roque Power Corp. (SRPC) uses water from the reservoir to generate power for the Luzon Grid.

The dam’s water used in power generation goes to an inlet canal that flows downstream. This further flows down to the National Irrigation Administration’s infrastructure for irrigating the farms in eastern and central Pangasinan as well as northern Tarlac.

Rivero also disclosed that the ₱275-million rehabilitation of the San Roque spillway has been completed three months ahead of this rainy season.

The project, she said, ensures the stability of the dam and the safety of the people downstream of the project. She added that the San Roque Dam is stable enough to “withstand any type of disaster”, 15 years after its commissioning.

The San Roque dam is the highest rock-filled dam in the whole of Southeast Asia, the second highest in Asia and the third highest in the world.

The dam has also a component that ensures water quality aside from facilities for power generation and irrigation, Rivero said. (Leonardo Micua)
